MAKER'S MARK
What really goes into making a handmade bourbon whisky like Maker’s Mark?
Quality is the most important thing. Founded in 1953, Maker's Mark believes the people who make the whisky should make the decisions -- not the accountants.
While quality is first and foremost, history is important, too. When Bill Samuels, Sr set out to craft a bourbon with a smooth, sophisticated taste, he also preached that in order to arrive at that result, he would remain committed to the values his ancestors passed down through the years: that whisky should be hand-crafted in small batches by people, not machines.
The level of craftsmanship that Bill Samuels, Sr. started over 40 years ago is still practiced at Maker's Mark Distillery today. This process is who they are. When Bill Samuels, Sr. bought the 200-acre site in 1953, it was the Burks Spring Distillery that had begun operation in 1805. In 1980, the entire distillery was recognized by then-U.S. Secretary of the Interior Cecil Andress. He designated Maker’s Mark Distillery a National Historic Landmark. Today they are the smallest and oldest currently operating distillery in the nation.
